Because it is inexpensive. In the U.S., major loopholes in federal law allow the cosmetics industry to put thousands of synthetic chemicals into personal care products, even if those chemicals are linked to cancer, infertility or birth defects. At the same time as untested chemicals have been steadily introduced into our environment, breast cancer incidence has risen dramatically.
Petroleum jelly can create the illusion of moisturized, hydrated skin, all the while suffocating your pores. It’s water-repellant and not water-soluble, meaning it merely seals the barrier so that moisture does not leave the skin. So while you might feel the instant gratification of a softened surface, you’re actually drying out your pores by keeping out air and moisture.
Artificial Fragrance are synthetic chemicals that do not have any medicinal or aroma therapeutic value. These molecules of scent can wreak havoc on your skin by causing contact dermatitis, a seriously red and itchy rash, eczema or other allergic reactions like a headache or asthma.
It’s much cheaper to use artificial fragrance/parfumerie rather than real organic essential oils.
Parabens are getting into your body. In March, Dr. Philippa Darbre and her team at published the results of a study that replicated the original study done in 2004, with a much larger sample size. They looked at the concentration of five parabens in breast tumor tissue. One or more types were found in 99 percent of the tissue samples, and all five were measurable in 60 percent of the samples. “The take-home message was that we validated the earlier study with a much more substantial study. Parabens are getting into the breast, and they’re getting in in significant amounts,” she explains.
