Hyaluronic Acid

You may be on a carb-avoidance diet, but here’s one carbohydrate we bet you’ll fall in love with—although you won’t be swallowing it in this case. It’s hyaluronic acid, also known as hyaluronan or hyaluronate, and yes, it’s a carbohydrate, or even more specifically a mucopolysaccharide (try saying that 10 times quickly!), which occurs naturally in the human body and also is found in roosters’ combs!
It’s a viscous gel, whose consistency is similar to that of Jello, and which has many benefits and many medical applications. The one of interest to us here at Nordic Beauty, and the one I want to talk to you about today, is its incredible ability to bind to water. When included in a topical preparation, such as our Nordic Beauty serum, it does a fabulous job of moisturizing the skin.
Hyaluronic acid is currently being heavily researched for its ever-expanding roster of beneficial properties and is used in applications as far ranging as eye surgery and better joint function, but it is its use as a moisturizer that is most relevant to our products. Hyaluronic acid binds so well to water that it is considered hydrophilic (water loving) and has been described as “nature’s moisturizer.” Because it is all that—both a natural product and an excellent moisturizer—it is a key component in our serum.
In addition to treating common, ordinary dry skin, it’s useful in treating dry, scaly skin, a condition known as xerosis, which can be brought about by atopic dermatitis, or eczema, among other causes. Hyaluronic acid also is employed for healing wounds, burns, wrinkles and skin ulcers.
Hyaluronic acid acts as a cushion and lubricant in the tissues (and in the joints as well), thus restoring the freshness of youth to your skin.
And, at the risk of repeating myself, it’s a totally natural product, something your body manufactures every day.
No wonder we here at Nordic Beauty are so excited about having hyaluronic acid in the formulation of our beneficial, moisturizing serum!
